WELCOME:

I am an independent Historic Buildings, Architectural and Planning Consultant.  I provide personal architectural and planning services for people who own, manage and work with historic and listed buildings, conservation areas and sensitive building contexts.

I have more than 25 years’ experience as an Architect and Town Planner working with listed buildings, conservation areas and other historic assets, big and small.

My services include:

  • Building histories to inform proposals, for personal interest, or as a gift.

  • Feasibility studies, to inform proposals and identify what alternatives are possible.

  • Advising owners and potential owners on the considerations, responsibilities and benefits of owning statutorily listed buildings, enabling them to better make decisions about ownership, proposals and negotiations.

  • Condition and heritage surveys; Church Quinquennials, reports and advice on historic building issues and upgrading; giving effective, practical and efficient maintenance proposals, low-impact sympathetic solutions for repairs and damp, and advice on making buildings more efficient to run.

  • Heritage statements, Impact assessments and Design statements to inform schemes and to explain and support planning applications.

  • Management and Conservation plans, to assess areas, their heritage significance and importance, and to make proposals how best to manage and enhance them.

  • Architectural design and enhancements; upgrading and extending existing buildings and designing new buildings within sensitive contexts.

  • Management, negotiations and submissions of applications for Planning and Listed Building Consents, using my in-depth practical knowledge of Local Authority requirements, processes and priorities to reduce delay and to give proposals the greatest chance of first-time success.

  • Appeals, Hearings and Public Inquiry; advising on alternatives to deal with refusals, and to adapt and resubmit previously unsuccessful schemes to overcome and better deal with the issues raised.

  • Advising and representing individuals, local groups, Parishes and communities interested in planning for the future, preserving and conserving special structures, buildings, spaces and the wider environment, and responding to planning proposals, local Plans & appeals.
  • Presentations, illustrations and publications.
  • Related historic building services, such as informal advice and visits, historic interpretations and advising on sources of compatible materials, heritage courses and resources.

The photographs on this website are some of the historic buildings and projects I have worked with.  My clients so far have included private building owners, managers and occupiers, local communities, charities, Churches and Trusts, English Heritage, the National Trust and the Landmark Trust.

I am a fully Chartered Architect and full member of both the Royal Institute of British Architects and the Institute of Historic Building Conservation; committed to the high standards of professionalism, the continuing professional development and championing of good design that underpins both organisations.

I provide a personal service, finding practical solutions and options to best suit your circumstances; and making best use of your building and its context.

I provide a free initial enquiry service and free quotations on request; and look forward to working with you.
